The Three Tanians on Swami Vedanta Desikan
In Sri Vaishnava tradition, before reciting the works or hymns of the Azhwars and Acharyas, we first sing special verses written in their praise. These short verses, which show our respect and devotion on the author, are called “Tanian.”
The word Tanian has two meanings:
It praises a specific person, so it is called tanian.
It is an independent verse, not taken from any bigger text, so it is also called tanian.
Swami Vedanta Desika has three important tanians that every Desika devotee should know.
Just as our tradition has tattva-trayam (three truths) and rahasya-trayam (three sacred mantras), Desika devotees also have these three tanians.
Below is the simple explanation of all three.
1. Sanskrit Tanian by Sri Nainaracharya
श्रीमान् वेङ्कटनाथार्यः कवितार्किक केसरी ।
वेदान्ताचार्य वर्यो मे सन्निधत्तां सदा हृदि ॥
श्रीमान् → திருக்கல்யாண குணங்கள் நிறைந்தவர்,
वेङ्कटनाथार्यः → வேங்கடநாதர் எனப்படும் ஆசாரியர்
कवि तार्किक केसरी → கவிதையிலும் தர்க்கத்திலும் சிங்கம் போல வல்லவர்
वेदान्ताचार्य वर्यः → வேதாந்த ஆசாரியர்களில் சிறந்தவர்
मे → என்
हृदि → இதயத்தில்
सदा → எப்போதும்
सन्निधत्तां → நிறைந்திருக்கட்டும்
வேங்கடநாதன் எனும் பெயர்பெற்றவரும், கவிதார்க்கிக ஸிம்ஹமானவரும், வேதாந்தாசார்யர் என்று புகழப்படுவருமான ஆசார்ய ஸ்ரீமாந், எப்பொழுதும் என்னிதயத்தில் விளங்கட்டும்.
Meaning (simple):
May Sri Venkatanatha (Swami Vedanta Desika)—who has all divine qualities, who is like a lion among poets and debaters, and who is the best among Vedanta teachers—always stay in my heart.
Sri Nainaracharya, Swami Vedanta Desika’s son, composed this tanian in Srirangam, when he was only 12 years old, on the day of Punarvasu star in the month of Chaitra, year Kali 4430.
We recite this tanian before chanting Swami Desika’s Sanskrit works.
2. Sanskrit Tanian by Sri Brahmatantra Swatantra Swami
रामानुज दयापात्रं ज्ञान वैराग्य भूषणम् ।
श्रीमद्वेङ्कटनाथार्यं वन्दे वेदान्त देशिकम् ॥
Meaning (simple):
I bow to Srimad Venkatanatha, Swami Vedanta Desika, who received the grace of Sri Ramanuja and his own acharya Atreya Ramanuja (Appullar), and who shines with the ornaments of wisdom and detachment.
When Swami Desika went to Melkote, Sri Brahmatantra Swatantra Swami stayed with Nainaracharya and studied the “Bhagavad Vishayam” (Tiruvaymozhi 6000-padi) and the great work “Nigama Parimalam” (74000-padi commentary).
Deeply moved by these teachings, he composed this tanian on Bhadrapada month, Shukla Paksha Dvitiya, and offered it to Swami Desika.
Swami Desika happily accepted it and instructed that it should be sung before the Divya Prabandham recitation.
3. Tamil Tanian by Sri Pillai Lokacharya
Tamil Pasuram:
சீர் ஒன்று தூப்புல் திருவேங்கடமுடையான்
பார் ஒன்றச் சொன்ன பழமொழியுள் - ஓர் ஒன்று
தானே அமையாதோ தாரணியில் வாழ்வார்க்கு
வான் ஏறப் போம் அளவும் வாழ்வு.
Meaning (simple):
Swami Desika, who appeared in Thuppul as Venkatesa, is full of divine qualities and shows people on earth the path to Paramapadam (moksha). Are even one of his teachings not enough to help people live a good life and reach the highest goal? (Even a little of his teachings is enough to make life successful that is to lead us to Srivaikuntam.)
Sri Pillai Lokacharya studied Sri Bhashya and Rahasya meanings from Swami Desika in Srirangam. To spread Desika’s greatness, he composed this tanian and offered it to him.
This tanian is sung before Sri Rahasya Traya Sara, Chillarai Rahasyams, and Desika Prabandham.
4. Spl Sanskrit Verse by Sri Nainaracharya
कवितार्किकसिंहाय कल्याणगुणशालिने।
श्रीमते वेङ्कटेशाय वेदान्तगुरवे नमः॥
கவிதார்கிக ஸிம்மமானவரும், திருக்கல்யாண குணங்கள் நிறைந்தவரும், வேங்கடநாதனும், வேதாந்த குருவாக விளங்குபவரை நமஸ்கரிக்கிறேன்.
Meaning: I offer my salutations to Vedanta Desikan, the lion among poets and logicians, who is filled with divine and auspicious qualities, and who is Venkatanatha, the great Vedanta Acharya.
We recite this tanian after chanting Swami Desikan’s works.
5. Spl Sanskrit Verse by Srivaishnava elders assembled at Azhagiya Manavalan Thiruvolakkam
वादिद्विपशिरोभङ्ग पञ्चानन पराक्रमः।
श्रीमान् वेङ्कटनाथार्यः चिरं विजयतां भुवि ॥
वादि द्विप शिरो भङ्ग → மதம் பிடித்த யானையைப் போன்ற (தவறான வாதங்களைச் செய்யும்) எதிரிகளின் தலைகளைப் பிளப்பவர்.
पञ्चानन पराक्रमः → சிங்கம் போன்ற வீரம் கொண்டவர். (யானையை சிங்கம் அடக்குவது போல, தவறான வாதங்களைச் செய்பவர்களைத் தனது அறிவால் அடக்குபவர்).
श्रीमान् वेङ्कटनाथार्यः → அனைத்து மங்களங்களும் பொருந்திய 'வேங்கடநாதன்' என்னும் இயற்பெயர் கொண்ட இந்த ஆச்சார்யார் (வேதாந்த தேசிகன்).
चिरं विजयतां भुवि → இந்த உலகத்தில் நீண்ட காலம் வெற்றிகரமாக (புகழுடன்) வாழ்ந்து அருளட்டும்.
தவறான வாதங்களை முன்வைப்பவர்கள் மதம் பிடித்த யானைகள் என்றால், அவர்களை அடக்கும் சிங்கத்தைப் போன்றவர் வேதாந்த தேசிகன். சகல ஐஸ்வர்யங்களும் நிறைந்த வேங்கடநாதராகிய இந்த ஆச்சார்யார், இந்த பூமியில் பல்லாண்டு காலம் வெற்றியுடன் நிலைத்திருக்கட்டும்.
Conclusion
Not only Swami Desika’s great books, but even his tanians & verses hailing him help us grow spiritually. For a Desika devotee, the three tanians are like a daily treasure, just like the rahasya-trayam.
