01 - திருவரங்கம் என்னும் அரங்கம் – Srirangam, the Sacred Stage
देवो नः शुभमातनोतु दशधा निर्वर्तयन् भूमिकां
रङ्गे धामनि लब्ध निर्भर रसैरध्यक्षितो भावुकैः ।
यद्भावेषु पृथग्विधेष्वनुगुणान् भावान् स्वयं बिभ्रती
यद्धर्मैरिह धर्मिणी विहरते नानाकृतिर्नायिका ॥ 1 ॥

ரங்கே தாமநி - रङ्गे धामनि - திருவரங்கமென்னும் தலத்தில்
அத்யக்ஷித: - अध्यक्षित: - காணப்படுமவனான

ஆதநோது - आतनोतु - அளித்திடவேண்டும்.
நாயிகா - नायिका - திருவரங்க நாச்சியார்
ப்ருதக்விதேஷு - पृथग्विधेषु - வெவ்வேறான
யத் பாவேஷு - यत् भावेषु - எவனுடைய அவதாரங்களில்
அநுகுணாந் - अनुगुणान् - ஏற்ற
பாவாந் - भावान् - அவதாரங்களை
ஸ்வயம் - स्वयं - தானும்
பிப்ரதீ - बिभ्रती - எடுத்துக்கொண்டு
நாநா ஆக்ருதி: - नाना आकृति: - பல்வகை வடிவுடையவளாய்
யத் தர்மை: - यत् धर्मै: - எவனுடைய தர்மங்களோடு
தர்மிணீ - धर्मिणी - ஒத்த தர்மங்களையுடையவளாய்
இஹ - इह - இவ்வுலகில்
விஹரதே - विहरते - விளையாடுகின்றாளோ.
உலகில் நடிகன் பற்பல வேடங்களை அணிந்து நாடக மேடைக்கு வந்து நடிப்பான். அப்பொழுது நடியும் அவனது வேடத்துக்கு ஏற்ற வேடத்தை அணிந்து மேடைக்கு வந்து ஏற்றவாறு நடிப்பாள். இவர்களின் நடிப்பைக் கண்டு ரஸிகர்களான மக்கள் மனமகிழ்வார்கள். இங்குத் திருவரங்கமே 'ரங்கம்' என்ற பெயருக்கு இணங்க ஒரு நாடக மேடை. இதில் திருவரங்கனும் திருவரங்க நாச்சியாரும் நடிப்பவராவர். திருவரங்கனென்னும் நடிகன் மத்ஸ்யம் - கூர்மம் - வராஹம் நரசிங்கம் முதலிய பத்து வேடங்களை அணிந்து நடிக்கின்றான். இது இவனுக்கு ஒரு லீலையாயுள்ளது. திருவரங்க நாச்சியாரென்னும் நடியும் இவனுடைய அவதாரங்களுக்கு ஏற்ற வடிவு கொள்கின்றாள். இவன் செய்யும் படைத்தல் காத்தல் முதலிய செயல்களுக்கு ஏற்ற செயல்களை இவளும் புரிந்து துணை செய்கின்றாள். இதுவும் இவளுக்குத் திருவிளையாடலாகின்றது. இவர்களின் வேடத்தையும் செயலையும் கண்டு ரஸிகர்களான அடியார்கள் மிக்க மகிழ்ச்சி கொள்கின்றனர். இவ்வாறு பிராட்டியைப் பிரியாத திருவரங்கன் நமக்கு நலத்தையருளவேண்டும். 1
In this world, an actor wears many different costumes and comes onto the stage to perform, and the actress too dresses according to her role and acts in a way that suits the play. The audience watches their performance and feels great joy. In the same way, Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple is itself a grand stage, true to its name “Rangam.” Here, Ranganatha and Ranganayaki are the divine actors. Thiruvarangan takes on the ten different roles such as Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Narasimha, and others, and for Him these incarnations are divine play (leela). Thiruvaranga Nachiyar also assumes forms suitable to each of His incarnations and supports Him in all His acts of creation, protection, and other divine deeds; for Her too, this is sacred divine play. Seeing their divine roles and actions, the devotees—who are the true rasikas—experience deep joy. May Thiruvarangan, who is never separated from Piratti, bless us with all goodness.

- Bhagawan Sriranganathan is the One who takes up ten roles (avatars) as an actor. He is the One who appears on the grand stage (arangam) called Srirangam, a place filled with joyous rasikas. He is the One with whom His divine consort, Sri Ranga Nachiyar, takes up befitting roles in His various incarnations (avatarams) and follows Dharma in perfect harmony with the Dharma of Rangan. May that Sriranganathan grant us all auspiciousness.
- Perumal and Piratti are always together, even during the incarnations.
- Piratti is the Saha-Dharma-Charini (the divine consort who shares His dharma).
- Here, Perumal’s dharma is Saranagata Samrakshanam (protecting those who surrender), and Piratti plays a great role in ensuring that Perumal follows His dharma.
- Piratti reveals Perumal’s true identity (Swaroopa Nirupaka Dharmam).
- This shows the greatness of the devotees of Emperuman, who joyfully relish His avatarams and divine leelais.
- Swami Vedanta Desika composed this stotram during his stay at Srirangam Ranganathaswamy Temple, after having darshan of the Dasavatara Sannidhi Emperuman.
- The Dasavatara Sannidhi is the Thirumaligai of Kaliyan.
- Kaliyan (Tirumangai Alvar) also enjoyed the Archaavatara form. Following the tradition of “Kaliyan urai konda karuthudaiyon,” Swami Vedanta Desikan deeply immersed himself in both Vibhava Avatara and Archaavatara anubhavam.
